There are places just beyond the edge of clarity - where light shifts, stories gather, and forms begin to emerge. North of Obscura is a changing landscape of creative exploration; commissioned portraits, drifting alcohol inks, mechanical dreamers, and creatures with character and histories of their own. Nothing here stands still for long. The materials change. The mood shifts. The landscape expands.
Title: Bejewelled
Medium: Alcohol Inks

Hi, I’m Sandra.
I came to art after a head injury a few years ago, discovering in it a space to breathe, explore, and reconnect with the world. What began as simple curiosity grew into a passion for capturing what I see — and sometimes what I imagine.
Pastels became my first love, especially drawing dogs. I’ve taken many commissions from photographs and met countless “new friends” along the way.

I also create portraits for the charity Broken Biscuits, donating a percentage of each piece to support their incredible work helping disabled rescue dogs regain their freedom.
My work later expanded after connecting with award‑winning photojournalist Simon Townsley, whose images of life in Afghanistan inspired a powerful and humbling new direction in my art.

I’m now building my own creative space at northofobscura.com, where I can wander freely between subjects and mediums. I’d love for you to join me there.
You can also find my work at my solo exhibitions at Grange Court in Leominster in June and November, and again during h.Art week (5–13 September).

Recently, I have been captivated by images of a blues and jazz club, drawn in by the 'feel' of the music that spilled out as the door was briefly opened.
Join me on this journey ...
He stands in the warm glow of the stage lights, saxophone poised like an extension of his breath, each note carrying the weight of untold stories. The melody drifts through the room- slow, smoky and spellbinding - drawing every ear into its quiet gravity. When the final note fades, the silence lingers, as if the music refuses to let go.
I usually keep my work under wraps until it's finished, but I'm so enthralled with this piece that I thought I'd share how it's going.
I'm loving being drawn along by the scenes and music of those small clubs, down narrow alleyways, with dim lighting, jamming sessions, and fantastic musicians. This creative exploration has been inspiring.
Watch this space ... there's more to come.

From time to time, I accept bespoke commissions. If you feel your idea is a creative exploration that belongs northofobscura, I'd be glad to hear from you.
